Biography

I have over 25 years research experience in Earth System Science. My research focuses on the interactions between vegetation and climate. I was principal developer of the LPJ model, the World’s most highly cited Dynamic Vegetation Model (DVM), and am currently heavily involved in the development and application of the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator, JULES, which is UK national capability. I have been theme leader of (i) community experiments (ii) vegetation (iii) physiology in the JULES community. I have published extensively on modelling plant physiology, vegetation dynamics, biogeochemical cycles, and ecosystem-atmosphere interactions. I co-lead TRENDY, the international activity providing land flux estimates from an ensemble of DVMs for the Global Carbon Project’s (GCP) annual carbon budget update, and GCP’s Regional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes (RECCAP) phase, which has just started a second phase. Furthermore, I have been a work-package leader on an EU FP7 project entitled Land-use change: assessing the net climate forcing, and options for climate change mitigation and adaptation (LUC4C) which investigated land-use trade-offs across the energy-ecosystem-water nexus.
